She is a natural 5, light brown by the chart and darker than it sounds, never colored, worn up most days. The photo is light blonde with brown showing through, brightest at the face. In foils that is a level 8 light blonde between the brown, one visit on virgin hair.
Her ask, and what a 5 allows
Blonde pieces with brown between them, bright at the face. A virgin 5 in foils reaches a warm 8 in one sitting. Icy is a session or two, and that is worth saying before the first foil. Her part places the foils, and her ponytail adds one at the sideburns, the widow’s peak and behind each ear.
How light can light brown hair go with highlights?
A warm level 8 in one foil session, sometimes a 9, from a natural 5. The lift runs red-orange, orange, gold, yellow, and a 5 sits on orange longest, so a foil opened too early shows gold. Foils hold the scalp’s warmth and lift lighter and cleaner than open air. Pale yellow is the ceiling for the day.
20 or 30 volume developer for highlights on brown hair?
Thirty on her virgin 5, 20 on any piece that has seen lightener before, and 40 stays out of these foils. Twenty, the everyday foil developer, lifts evenly and stays at level. The 30 vol a virgin or dark start gets covers a 5 asking for an 8. Mix 1:2 by the tub, some 1:3, loose enough to move through a weave, one scoop per small bowl, because it swells.
Can 40 volume get the foils there faster
Faster at the start, then it dies out and the cuticle pays. It does get run in foils, and more often the answer is never, so it stays off this head. A virgin 5 reaches an 8 on 30 vol inside the hour.
Her first foil, start to fold
Off the part, a section thin enough to see through. Back-to-back slices at the hairline, then babylights packed close. Behind that, a medium weave with hair left out between foils, her lowlight. Hold the section straight out and push the foil tight to the scalp. Lightener starts just under the fold, never past it. Saturate both sides. Feather the top in peaks.
Fold it tight and move on.
Why do my highlights look stripey
The pieces were too wide, every foil on top was a slice, or a straight-back grid split at the part into stripes. A chunky piece lifts warm and slow and shows. A root tap softens them today, finer weaves between them next visit.
Yellow is the finish line
One timer when the last foil is in. From 25 minutes open the first foil placed, every 5 to 10 minutes. Finished is yellow to pale yellow with no gold left, up to 60 minutes where the foils went on at 20. Rinsed at 20 because it looks yellow, a 5 comes out ginger. The minutes by texture are a first look, not a rinse time.
Faults on a 5, and the fix
| Fault | What you see | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| Bleed marks, tiger stripes | Bright stripe at the root, past the foil | Start under the fold, a root tap today |
| Hollow spots | Polka dots inside a piece | Saturate both sides, refoil it on 20 vol |
| Ginger foils | Orange or gold against the brown | Out too early, tone at the level reached, blue base |
| Line of demarcation | Hard edge where a retouch starts | Feather the foil top, regrowth only |
Tap the root, tone the ends
Shampoo, condition, towel-dry, two bowls at the sink. A 6N or 7N demi on 10 vol tapped over the top inch, 3 to 5 minutes. Twenty minutes makes it a smudge, and it can be skipped, because a retouch must lift through that deposit and can band there. Then 8.1 with 8.2, the light blonde toner, violet for the yellow and blue for what orange is left, 5 to 20 minutes, wiped every 5. A natural 4 in the same foils starts a level further from yellow.
Do I need a toner after highlights on brown hair?
Yes on nearly every head, because a foil lifts to yellow and the toner is the blonde in the photo. A demi 8.1 with 8.2 on 10 vol turns that yellow cool or sandy. It can be skipped when the yellow is faint.
