Natural has no direction of its own, so it dilutes the gold without fighting it. At 50% gold the mix reads as a soft gold.

Both shades should come from the same line and series: same mixing ratio, same base. A 1:1 cream blended with a 1:2 shade is wrong for one of them whatever you do.

The quick version

Two shades blend to a level equal to the gram-weighted average of the two: 40 g of 7N with 20 g of 5N gives (7 × 40 + 5 × 20) ÷ 60 = 6.3. Tone does not average the same way. Opposite tones such as ash and copper cancel each other and leave a neutral brown, so check the pair before you check the sum.

Take each shade's level, multiply by its grams, add the two and divide by total grams: 40 g of a level 7 with 20 g of a level 5 gives (7 × 40 + 5 × 20) ÷ 60 = 6.33, a level 6 on its lighter side. But do it in your head once before you trust the tile.

Tone is a direction on the color wheel, and directions do not average; they add up, soften each other or cancel, depending on how far apart they sit, so the second tile gives a description where you expected a number.

7N + 7.3, 30 g of eachLevel: (7 × 30 + 7 × 30) ÷ 60 = 7.0. Tone: natural has no direction, so it dilutes the gold without fighting it. Half the pigment is gold, half neutral: a soft gold at level 7. Make it 45 g of N and 15 g of .3 and the gold share drops to 25%, which reads as a warm neutral rather than a gold. Same level, different intensity: that dial is the main reason to mix.
8.1 + 8.3, 30 g of eachLevel 8 again. Tone: ash is blue-green, gold is yellow, close to opposite on the wheel. Most of each cancels the other and what survives is a low-saturation, sandy neutral. That is beige, and it is how the .13 and .21 series are built inside the tube: one cool digit, one warm digit. It is a legitimate way to make a beige blonde when the shelf has no beige. Proportion sets temperature: 60% ash gives a cooler sand, 60% gold a warmer one.
5.4 + 7.1, 30 g of eachLevel: (5 × 30 + 7 × 30) ÷ 60 = 6.0 on paper. Tone: copper is orange, ash is blue-green, true opposites. They neutralize. The orange goes, the blue-green goes, and what is left is brown. Not copper-ash, just a slightly flat brown. Add the level gap: the 5 carries far more pigment than the 7, so the mix reads nearer 5.5 than 6. For a quieter copper, mix 5.4 with 5N; natural softens without canceling.

Tones are directions, not amounts

Picture each tone digit as an arrow. Natural has no arrow. Gold points at yellow, copper at orange, red at red, mahogany at red-violet, violet at violet, ash at blue-green. Beige (.13 or .21) is a short arrow, yellow with some blue in it, already a compromise.

Arrows pointing the same way keep the tone; the grams set its strength. Neighbors add up to something between. Arrows across the wheel cancel, more the nearer to opposite. Hair color is the only branch of chemistry where "what do I get if I mix these" is so often answered with "brown".

For two years clients asked for my beige by name. It was 8.1 and 8.3 at 2:1. Two parts ash to one part gold, 40 g and 20 g in the bowl. (Nobody reads the tube, so nobody asked. In fourteen years, perhaps three people have looked at the ratio on it.) The ratio did the work. At 1:1 the pair is the plain sand above, and the extra ash tipped it into the cooler, slightly gray beige people kept photographing in bathroom mirrors, under the worst light in the house.

Where the average lies to you

The level sum assumes every gram carries the same dye load. It does not. A level 4 tube holds far more pigment than a level 9, because it has to deposit a darker result, so mix a 4 with an 8 and the 4 wins by more than the grams say: half a level darker than the sum, a full level when the gap is wide.

I learned that with 5N and 8N at 30 g each.

She wanted a 6 and a half. The sum said 6.5. The hair said 5.5 at best. It cost her a second appointment and me ninety minutes of a Saturday with a color remover; the 8 had done little beyond thinning the 5.

Purpose is the second problem. A level 8 permanent is built to lift to 8 and deposit an 8 tone. Half and half with a 4 it has neither the pigment nor the developer share to do either, so what comes out is a 4 or 5 with a sheerer finish, and the calculator flags any gap over two levels for that reason. It cannot tell you how heavily a line loads its dark shades; some 5s mix like a 4.5, and the only way I know is a strand test or a year on that line.

Developer follows the color total: 60 g of mixed color at 1:1 takes 60 g of developer, and the volume still decides lift, as the level chart lays out. Two shades from one line share a ratio and a base; two from different lines may not, and then the ratio is wrong for one of them whatever you do, so both my tubes come from one line.

When to mix and when to just buy the shade

In my chair, I think a custom mix earns the second tube about one time in three: an intensity the tube does not offer; an in-between level when the shades sit within two levels; a pair that reinforces itself; a beige made on purpose. The rest of the time the first tube already had it; plenty of colleagues would put that figure higher.

Buy the shade when:

  • the tones cancel. A mixed brown is a worse brown than the one in the tube, and it cost two tubes;
  • the level gap is three or more;

Mixing two shades, questions answered

Can I mix two hair colors from different brands?

Honestly, no, even though nothing on the tube will stop you. Each line has its own mixing ratio, base and developer, so a 1:1 cream blended with a 1:1.5 cream is wrong for one of them however you split the developer. Keep both shades in the same line and the same series, permanent with permanent and demi with demi. Within one line, mixing is exactly what the shades are designed for.

What level do I get if I mix a level 5 and a level 7?

Equal grams give a level 6 on paper: (5 + 7) ÷ 2. On the hair it tends to sit a little darker, nearer 5.5, because the level 5 carries more pigment per gram than the 7, so weight the mix toward the 7 if you want the result to read as a true 6. Beyond a two-level gap the average stops being useful and the darker shade takes over.

Can I mix ash and copper to make a cooler copper?

They cancel: ash is blue-green and copper is orange, opposite each other on the wheel, so the mix is a neutral or slightly muted brown, and the way to calm a copper down is the natural (N) shade at the same level, which softens without canceling.

How do I make a beige blonde by mixing shades?

Mix a gold with an ash or a violet at the same level, for example 8.3 with 8.1, or 8.3 with 8.2. The cool tone cancels most of the yellow and leaves a low-saturation sand, which is what a .13 or .21 beige is. Half and half is a fair starting point; shift toward the cool shade for a cooler sand, and the beige I ran for two years was 8.1 and 8.3 at 2:1. On pre-lightened hair a demi toner on 10 volume does the same job more gently, and the toner selector picks the shade.

Do I add developer to each color separately or to the total?

To the total. Weigh both shades into the bowl first, then add developer at the ratio for the line on the combined color weight: 40 g plus 20 g of color at 1:1 wants 60 g of developer. Mixing each shade with developer on its own and then combining gives the same numbers but doubles the chances of a weighing error, and there is a second bowl to wash afterwards.

Can I mix a high-lift 12 series shade with a regular permanent color?

No. High-lift 12 series shades are a different product with their own ratio and developer, built to lift rather than deposit, and they should not be mixed with regular permanents. If you need something lighter than a level 10 result, use the high-lift on its own and follow its own instructions. Strand test first, as with any lightening step.
